JESSICA LAU
STATEMENT
If I have to check a box, I check the one that says ‘Asian’. I’m Chinese-American. Categorization, such as race or gender, can be useful tools that simplify the complexities and multiplicities of our world. Yet I continuously struggle to define myself this way because of the cross-cultural perceptions associated with this identifier and the limitations set by its biased truths. With this in mind, my most recent ceramic sculptures and collages address such socially defined categories and how they make for both understanding and misunderstanding.
BIO
Jessica Lau lives and works out of Somerville, MA. As an artist and art teacher, she contends with the notion of cultural hybridity to embrace her own involvement in constructing representations. She received her BFA from Syracuse University and will be receiving her MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University College of Art and Design in June 2020.

Wan Yang (b. 1992) is an artist working and living in San Francisco and Beijing. She received BFA from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2015. Wan Yang studied painting at Massachusettes College of Art and Design 2015-2017, where she found the way to express and communicate using painting and drawing, and she received a Master of Fine Arts in June 2017. Her work entitled OUTCAST belongs to the permanent collection of CAFA Art Museum of China Central Academy of Fine Arts, and the painting SUMMER WHISPER was collected by Copelouzos Family Art Museum in Athens, Greece. The physicality of making an art piece, for her, is primarily in the subconscious creative process. She believes art has the potential to inspire and empower, to shape lives and carve soon-to-be-trodden paths. Perception is in sharp focus for her creative working process; painting is an extension of her body. She paints to explore the world.
